Student illustrations for Mirabella the Monarch's Mysterious Migration

Illustrations for Mirabella the Monarch

Make-A-Book Project Update Summary: Illustrations are done (except for our make-up session). Ms Nall, the art teacher, has been great to work with. I learned an incredible amount about teaching from her, not least of all crowd management. And her personal teaching style is visible in the student’s drawings. I can say they are more… Continue Reading

Butterfly Ballot Boxes

Character Creation Contest

The Make-A-Book Project begins at Parker Woods Montessori I’m excited to announce that the new book will be about the monarch butterfly, which is truly one of the most amazing animals (insects are animals, too) on the planet. The monarch butterfly migrates from Canada to Mexico. It takes 4 generations to fly there and back.… Continue Reading

International Space Station over Earth the pale blue dot.

Spot the International Space Station

Here is an easy backyard adventure that have done 3 times already. You can easily spot the International Space Station flying overhead. Nasa will send you an email with a time and place when the International Space Station (ISS) will be overhead. It looks a lot like a fast airplane. The timing will be down to the exact minute, so it is very easy to spot. I even used a pair of binoculars that got at Goodwill.

Ruby the Red Worm inspired hundreds of homes to begin kitchen composting, and not just the families involved with the book, but the friends, families and neighbors one to two times removed, maybe more. Just a quick update to let everyone know that the we have not one, but three book projects are in the… Continue Reading

Kenyan school children jump for joy when they got their Falling Uphill books.

Falling Uphill in Kenya

Inspiring dreams Finally, it took two months for my package of books to arrive in Kenya. I marked the package “educational material for children,” and luckily no one stole it as often happens. I love how the photo captures them jumping in air, just like they are falling uphill. I hope the books encourage the… Continue Reading

Rain Barrel

Rain Barrel

This rain barrel took me about 2 hours to install and cost only $50 USD. The next day there was a huge rainstorm and it filled up in about 10 minutes.

Jumping jacks on a frozen lake

Here’s another item to add to your bucket list. Walking on top of a frozen lake is a simple and fun adventure many people can do near their home.

Bank of the Universe

I’ve been working with the YMCA after-school program this semester and the University of Cincinnati as a community professor. Yesterday’s activity from my new workbook (to be announced soon) was for the kids to write each other a check to help their friend’s dreams come true.

Grow grass not food sign for front lawn

Grow Food NOT Grass

What better way to have a backyard adventure than to grow a garden? Here is my new “Grow Food NOT Grass” sign that I made using a wood burner, a nice piece of walnut and some scraps. This goes with the terraced garden that I built in the spring. Actually, this is the front lawn,… Continue Reading
