The Argonauts: An Exploration of Life

Kid's Stuff

Fun and kid friendly things to do, like News, Backyard Adventures, the Make-A-Book Project and submitting your own story, dream or book illustration.

Jumping jacks on a frozen lake

Here’s another item to add to your bucket list. Walking on top of a frozen lake is a simple and fun adventure many people can do near their home.

Bank of the Universe

I’ve been working with the YMCA after-school program this semester and the University of Cincinnati as a community professor. Yesterday’s activity from my new workbook (to be announced soon) was for the kids to write each other a check to help their friend’s dreams come true.

Grow grass not food sign for front lawn

Grow Food NOT Grass

What better way to have a backyard adventure than to grow a garden? Here is my new “Grow Food NOT Grass” sign that I made using a wood burner, a nice piece of walnut and some scraps. This goes with the terraced garden that I built in the spring. Actually, this is the front lawn,… Continue Reading

Are you a flutterby or butterfly? Don't let life pass you by.

Are you a flutterby?

Do you stop to smell the flowers and sip the nectar of life? Or do you just flutter past everything and let your wings get caught in the winds of life?

Vamos Chicas Paraguay Peace Corp-12

Vamos Chicas Vamos

The Spanish edition of my “Falling Uphill” kids book “Cayendo Hacia Arriba” is being used by the Peace Corp in Paraguay to teach kids how to read and dream.

The giving tree sequel (redux). The final pages revised.

The Giving Tree Sequel

Have you ever read the classic children’s story “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein? I’ve always been disturbed that the tree sacrifices itself to a greedy old man — so I rewrote the ending and drew new pictures.

How to fall uphill

Here is a fun new graphic that I created. It has been simmering in my brain for years. I think it really captures the essence of how doubt and fear are essential to any adventure. The trick is harnessing that emotional fuel and turning disadvantages into advantages.

Falling Uphill in Paraguay with the Peace Corps

Scott Stoll is an author from my hometown who served as the U.S. Embassy’s cultural ambassador in Argentina during the 2011-2012 school year. His time in Argentina and collaboration with Argentine schools resulted in a Spanish language version of his book, Falling Uphill: The Secret of Life, about his 4 year journey around the world on his bicycle.

Will Allen and Ruby the Red Worm

Once again I was honored to present at the Growing Power International Urban & Small Farm Conference. Pictured here is Will Allen, one of Milwaukee’s most prominent citizens and the founder of Growing Power.

Celebrating the book

Pictured below are the students from Argentina holding their certificates of achievements and their copy of “Cayendo Hacia Arriba” the book that we created together. In my opinion the celebration of the book is the most important step. It helps the students realize their purpose in life, take a step of action with their passion… Continue Reading

The Cupcake Boy is here

The Cupcake Boy is the story about a boy who makes the most beautiful and tasty cupcakes in the world; however, the villagers take the boy for granted.

Coloring Books

One mother was kind enough to send me this photo: “My kids thought your book needed a little color”. I think this is a great surprise.

Cupcake Fundraiser

We celebrated the new book, The Cupcake Boy, at Amy Belle Elementary at their Spring Fling. It was a big success! It makes me feel fulfilled to see all the proud young student illustrators. Below is a young artist displaying her picture of the cupcake boy realizing he is like a greedy little piggy. Pictures… Continue Reading
